From The Guardian:
“All books can be thrust into a genre, and lit fic is simply one of many. As a tag, it tells us nothing about the intrinsic value of any individual title. There are good books and bad books, and both are to be found from one end of the fictional horizon to the other.”
Literary fiction has always been a problematic term and definitely one the book community (writers readers and publishers) need to work on. The trouble is the term describes a particular type of fiction which doesn’t fall into an easy genre category. And we love categories! But I think we can come up with something better.
And I promise that’s the last Guardian link for a little while.
